Black tea, silk taffeta, silk shantung, Potassium Ferricyanide and Ferric Ammonium Citrate, red ribbon, thread
This project was designed based on my sister, Melissa, as the end-user. I wanted to focus on her cultural identity and experiences growing up in Melbourne while still being exposed to our Chinese heritage. Childhood memories and our grandparents (who we'd visit every year in Tianjin) are a pivotal connection for her.
I had experimented with cyanotypes in lockdown, but this time wanted to push myself and see if I were able to print Melissa's childhood photos onto fabric. The entire process was fairly exploratory as I had no idea if it was going to work. I inverted the monochromatic images and printed them onto recycles acrylic sheets (abandoned by an ex-student's previous project).
